Exhibits and special events related to this culturally diverse city.
Urban Cultural Parks link New York State communities from New York City to Whitehall, and from Albany to Buffalo. Each Urban Cultural Park or Heritage Area is developed around a theme such as transportation, natural environment or reform movements. Set among traditional parks, historic neighborhoods, and old mills and churches, in an Urban Cultural Park, the community itself becomes the park.

It’s the place to meet on your way to and through New York City, but there’s more to Grand Central than train tracks. (It’s not called “Grand” for nothing.)

The terminal, a thruway for millions of commuters every week, offers many a chance to conjure up to romance of train travel. Built in 1913 and recently revitalized with shops and restaurants, Grand Central holds many secrets that you only need to look closely to see.

Atop the station is Campbell Apartment, ’30s tycoon John W. Campbell’s hideaway office and a luxurious escape from the bustle below. For great dining views, check out Michael Jordan’s Steak House on the west side of the concourse and Metrazur on the east.

Below the tracks are levels of shopping and dining-from clothiers to florists to souvenir shops. And often in Vanderbilt Hall are visiting art exhibits and other events.

And don’t forget to look up in the main concourse. The illustrated blue-green cathedral ceiling offers a different view of the nighttime sky, with constellations and other heavenly bodies-sometimes highlighted with a periodic zodiac laser show you may be lucky enough to catch.

Staycation in New York City Central Park

Central Park plays an essential role in the everyday lives of New Yorkers by providing 843 acres of paths, lakes and open spaces for escaping the din and chaos of the surrounding city. The design for Central Park was conceived by Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvert Vaux, who submitted their “Greenswald Plan” for Central Park during a contest organized by the Central Park Commission. When Central Park first opened in the winter of 1859 it was the first artificially landscaped park in the United States. Olmstead and Vaux’s design integrated formal and pastoral elements throughout the park, offering visitors everything from formal walkways like The Mall and Literary Walk to the wild, woodsy area of the Ramble. Central Park is a great place for picniking, listening to music and exploration. There are many fun, free events in Central Park, particularly in the summer.

The sea jellies, sharks, and walruses are the biggest hits, but the whole family can enjoy standing under a curved pane of glass as a waterfall cascades overhead and splashes past.
The seahorse exhibit is amazing, including yellow horses and dragon horses, and detailed information about how baby horses are born. The octopus, who would squeeze himself into a corner even if given a larger tank (invertebrates apparently like confined areas), will wow kids of all ages as he ripples his tentacles past the glass.
The Sea Lion shows are wonderful – outdoors all year, weather permitting – and are included in the price of admission. Call in advance to check times.
A Deep Sea 3-D simulator ride ($4 per person, per ride, with purchase of an Aquarium admission ticket) is open to folks 36 inches and taller, and launches participants inside a deep sea submarine to explore the ocean floor, dive with a sperm whale, and tangle with a giant squid.
