LaFramboise Island Nature Area – South Dakota
Trails – Hiking/Bicycling
Over seven miles of trails wind through the island’s trees and meadows, where users can view birds and a variety of animals. It is not uncommon to view bald eagles and deer on the island.
History
The island was known to Lewis and Clark as “Bad Humor” island due to a tense encounter with the Teton Sioux held nearby. The island’s current name is attributed to Joseph LaFramboise. He built Fort LaFramboise at the mouth of the Bad River (west of the island). In later years, parts of the island were farmed.
Missouri River Landscape
As upstream dams changed the water flow in the Missouri River in the mid-1960s, the tree habitat on this sand bar island has changed to include species such as cedar, ash and Russian olive. Native cottonwood trees are also part of the island landscape, and once flourished due to the once natural flooding of the river.

Staycation in South Dakota’s Angostura Recreation Area
Angostura Reservoir is a water-lover’s haven in the southern Black Hills. With plenty of room for boating, fishing and swimming, this recreation area attracts visitors to its clear waters and natural sand beaches. The dam was built in 1949 by the Bureau of Reclamation across the Cheyenne River for irrigation purposes but paved the way for recreation. The word “angostura” is Spanish for “narrows.”
Places to stay
Angostura Resort Management provides concessionaire services to the park through a marina with 3 locations and 155 boat slips, a beach club, six rental lodges with outdoor pool and a full service floating convenience store in the marina. The facility is privately operated under agreement with the Division of Parks and Recreation. Contact by phone: (800) 364-8831.
Four campgrounds offer a variety of camping opportunities along the reservoir’s shores. Cascade CG (in the north unit) and Horsehead (in the south unit) are the larger of the four. Cheyenne CG (in the north unit) and Hat Creek CG (in the south unit) are the smaller of the four. Eight cabins overlook the reservoir.
Angostura is one of the few large reservoirs in western South Dakota. The lake’s crystal waters and strong fishery make it a popular vacation area. The average depth is 29 feet and the deepest portion of the pool is 75 feet deep when full. The lake’s average summer temperature is 66 degrees F. The reservoir has 36 miles of shoreline and some of the finest sandy beaches in the state. This is a major attraction for many visitors.
Educational Activities
Angostura Recreation Area hosts an array of interpretive and educational activities during the summer season. Each program is geared for families with young children and will expose participants to the various natural and cultural features of the Southern Black Hills. All of the programs are free for the general public; however, a valid park entrance license is required on all vehicles entering the recreation area.
Cascade and Horsehead Campgrounds are the featured locations for most of the programs. The program times are
9 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday through late August. A few special events are also planned at nearby shelter houses for visitors wishing to participate in a mid-week activity or an evening program. For more specific information, please review the planned activity descriptions listed below.
Camping
For kids ages 7-12 with an interest in the outdoors, Angostura Recreation Area has something special for you. Staycation in South Dakota’s Roughlock Falls Nature Area
The Roughlock Falls Nature Area is located in Spearfish Canyon and is considered one of the most beautiful locations in the Black Hills. The water feeding Roughlock Falls flows into Spearfish Canyon from Little Spearfish Creek. The limestone cliffs surrounding the falls give the area a magnificent appearance. Spearfish Canyon highlights millions of years of superbly crafted scenery into an outdoor wonder that is impressive and unique to the Black Hills.
Things to do
Roughlock Falls is spectacular to view and photograph. Designated walking paths and hiking trails provide the opportunity to explore the area. Bird watching, wildlife viewing, fishing and picnicking can all by enjoyed in the nature area. Hiking the beautiful one mile trail from the lower trailhead is encouraged as parking in the upper parking lot is limited.
Roughlock Falls is one of the few places in the Black Hills to observe the rare American Dipper. They can both walk and swim underwater if you are a bird watcher this will be heaven for you.
Fishing
Little Spearfish Creek provides ample opportunities for fishing. Brown trout and brook trout can be found from the lower trailhead to the bridge below the falls.
Water Activities
The road from Savoy to Roughlock Falls is closed in the winter. This road is a snowmobile trail from Dec. 1 through March 31.
There is a one mile hiking trail that goes from the lodge up to the falls that can be used all year round. However, snow and ice are not removed from this trail and it can become treacherous and icy. Use of this trail is at your own risk
